5. Olive Oil sunburn treatment

If extra virgin olive oil is gently applied to the skin right after sun bathing or tanning treatments may reduce the pain and redness of a sunburn. Research published in April 2008 clearly showed that oleuropein (derived from olive oil & olive oil leaves) reduces redness, water loss from the skin and blood flow after sunburn.[1] The extra blood flow causes swelling which is one of the causes of sunburn pain.

Oleuropein is a phenolic compound (polyphenolics) derived from olive leaves and oil. Research published in April 2008 "clearly showed that oleuropein formulations highlighted lenitive efficacy by reducing erythema, transepidermal water loss and blood flow of about 22%, 35% and 30% respectively. The study allowed us to point out the lenitive property of oleuropein, opening the way to further trials to deepen our specific knowledge about this natural molecule, which could be used in association with other active ingredients in cosmetics to repair UV damages."[1]

Scientists have discovered the polyphenol in extra virgin olive oil that gives greatest protection from heart attack and stroke. DHPEA-EDA is the main antioxidant in olive oil that protects red blood cells from damage.
